Young and Hungry

Being a starving artist is so overrated. If you’re fresh meat in the freelancing world, Young and Hungry is the event for you! Meet three talented local artists who have made a name for themselves and learn from their success as entrepreneurs and freelancers. Be hungry for knowledge, not food.

Nathan Lathrop of Tandem Creative Studio
Nathan Lathrop is a graphic designer specializing in print media and product design. His 18-year career spans from California to Kansas City, and his work sells in global retailers such as Barnes & Noble and Target, as well as independent Gift and Specialty stores. After leaving the Creative Director role with Hallmark Business Connections in 2014, he began the current phase of his career as a freelance designer and founder of Tandem Creative Studio in Kansas City, MO.

Sarah Walsh

Sarah Walsh is an internationally published illustrator who’s project range spans from picture books, apparel, home decor and greeting cards to name a few. Her work has also been featured on Creative Pep Talk, Buzzfeed & The Jealous Curator. Sarah has been a working artist since 2001, starting out as a designer/illustrator hybrid at Hallmark Cards in Kansas City. In 2013 she branched off solo style into the freelance world after connecting with an art agent named Lilla Rogers. Bright color, fashion, mid century design, the 80’s, fantasy, hand lettering, world culture & folk art art are some of the elements that inform her work. Sarah’s been fortunate enough to collaborate with clients like Chronicle, Blue Q, Nosy Crow, The Guardian, & Frankie Magazine. Writing and illustrating a children’s book or working with a fashion designer to create a quirky haute couture clothing line are two of her dream projects! When Sarah isn’t busy doing client work she fills her sketchbook with personal paintings or creates products such as art prints, enamel pins & pillows for Tigersheep Friends, with her husband Colin Walsh, a fellow illustrator. Alyissa Johnson
Alyissa was born and raised in the booming metropolis of Ottawa before scarpering off to the nearby University of Kansas to study graphic design. She graduated in 2011 with two degrees, a fair amount of debt, and dreams of success and notoriety.
Today Alyissa lives in Kansas City as a designer, a self-taught handlettering artist, and occasional teacher. She shacks up with her enthusiastic but remarkably timid guinea pig Peach, maintaining a kitchen full of gadgets she rarely uses. On the weekends you may find her at a local craft fair, selling prints and tapestries of her work with a wry smile. She’s not quite notorious yet, but she’s working on it.
