As a board member, you can contribute to innovative programming, meaningful community outreach, and essential initiatives, such as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), that positively impact the design field. Each position on the AIGA KC Board brings its own set of responsibilities and opportunities for growth. Here’s an overview of the various roles and what you can expect:
Ideal for those new to AIGA KC leadership, Associates support their committee with day-to-day operations and special projects. This role allows you to gain hands-on experience, develop skills, and make valuable contributions. Associates work closely with Directors and Chairs, learning the ropes and building connections within the chapter.

Chairs lead entire committees, guiding Directors and Associates in achieving the committee’s annual goals. Chairs are responsible for strategic planning, communication, and coordination within their committee. They work closely with other committee leaders and board members to create cohesive, impactful programs for AIGA KC. Chairs are essential in shaping the chapter’s offerings and ensuring a positive member experience.
VPs serve as senior leaders on the board, helping guide long-term planning and overseeing multiple committees. VPs support and advise Chairs, lead collaborative efforts across the board, and ensure alignment with AIGA KC’s strategic goals. This role is perfect for seasoned leaders who are ready to take on a high-level role in directing the chapter’s development.
The President of AIGA KC is the chapter’s leader, responsible for setting the vision and direction of the organization. The President collaborates with VPs, Chairs, and Directors to execute the chapter’s goals, represent AIGA KC to the national organization, and ensure the chapter is serving its members and community effectively. The President’s role is one of stewardship, leadership, and big-picture thinking.
Our committees are at the heart of AIGA KC’s work. Each committee has a unique focus, offering board members the chance to work on specific areas that align with their interests and expertise.
The Programming Committee develops and executes a range of events, from workshops to networking gatherings. This team creates impactful experiences that foster learning, connection, and growth for AIGA KC members. From concept to execution, Programming offers hands-on event management opportunities.
Leading Kansas City Design Week (KCDW), the Community Engagement Committee brings together designers, community organizations, and cultural institutions to celebrate and explore the role of design in Kansas City. This committee collaborates with the Center for Architecture and Design (CFaD) to create a memorable KCDW experience.
The Community Outreach Committee works to expand AIGA KC’s presence through partnerships, collaborations, and community-based initiatives. This team drives engagement with local organizations, businesses, and nonprofits, creating meaningful opportunities for members and strengthening AIGA KC’s role in the wider community.
The Communications Committee manages AIGA KC’s brand voice across social media, email, website, and print materials. This team is responsible for promoting programs, events, and initiatives, ensuring members stay informed and engaged. It’s a great committee for anyone interested in marketing, design, and storytelling.
The Education Committee supports emerging designers through mentorship programs, portfolio events, and more. This committee builds bridges between students, young professionals, and the industry, making it ideal for those passionate about design education and professional development.
The DEI Committee is dedicated to fostering an inclusive and equitable chapter. This team develops initiatives, events, and policies that encourage diversity in design and ensure all voices are heard and valued in AIGA KC’s programming and leadership.
The A-Team organizes AIGA KC’s annual A-Awards, celebrating design excellence within Kansas City. Committee members plan and execute the competition, coordinate judging, and create a memorable gala event for the design community to recognize top talent.
The Leadership Committee, which includes the President, VPs, and Advisory members, is responsible for guiding the board toward AIGA KC’s long-term goals. This committee works on strategic planning, governance, and the chapter’s overall vision. Leaders with big-picture focus and commitment to the design community will find this committee rewarding.

While you can sign up anytime each Fall, we open applications for various board roles, giving members a chance to contribute their skills and perspectives to AIGA KC. In the Fall, our nominations committee sees your application and invites you to a board meeting or one of our events (e.g., Join the Board event). Then, we review each submission, and the board votes on new members. In January, new members attend an onboarding session to meet their committees, learn about their roles, and start making an impact.
