Kansas City

AIGA KC is a community of creatives of all types. Print, advertising, interactive, environmental – you name it. We’ve brought the likes of writers, strategists, photographers, educators, architects, developers and printers into our fold. Yes, AIGA has been around for a century, but this isn’t your club of yesteryear with secret handshakes and stuffy meetings. We strive to inspire talent, engage thinking and connect designers to one another.

AIGA, the professional association for design, is the place design professionals turn to first to exchange ideas and information, participate in critical analysis and research and advance education and ethical practice.

AIGA sets the national agenda for the role of design in its economic, social, political, cultural and creative contexts. AIGA also actively communicates the value of design to the business community and the public. Founded as the American Institute of Graphic Arts in 1914, AIGA is the oldest and largest membership association for professionals engaged in the discipline, practice and culture of designing.

Nationally, AIGA includes more than 25,000 members in 67 chapters who create, inspire and appreciate good design. AIGA chapters are local organizations that share the mission of the national AIGA and are formed by geographical region. A volunteer board of directors runs each chapter.

AIGA’s mission is to advance designing as a professional craft, strategic tool and vital cultural force.

Founded in 1989, AIGA Kansas City is currently a thriving chapter of more than 500 members; more than 35 dedicated volunteers run your KC board. In recent years, Kansas City has been noted for its growing concentration of the creative class, making up a significant part of the local economy. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, AIGA Kansas City remains known nationally as a chapter that continues to innovate and lead new initiatives and programs that inspire other chapters around the country.

The AIGA KC community draws creatives from all corners of the profession. Designers represent a range of practices including print, interactive, branding, advertising, marketing and environmental. They hail from boutique firms, large agencies and independent freelancer organizations, as well as a myriad of in-house teams ranging from creative companies such as Hallmark to tech companies like Garmin. And our creative community doesn’t stop at designers. We’re inclusive of writers, strategists, photographers, educators, architects, developers, printers, videographers, graffiti artists – you name it.

AIGA Kansas City is also proud to have a strong student base that keeps our community vivacious and curious. With eight student groups in our region, passionate young designers are a valued part of our membership. We fuel our student groups with perks like annual scholarships and events like Portfolio Day, and provide groups with the resources they need to create their own programming. Students are our legacy, and represent the AIGA KC of tomorrow.

AIGA Kansas City offers a variety of programming throughout the year that supports the interests of our diverse membership base, regardless of career stage. This includes quintessential inspirational lectures from national designer leaders, workshops and business development to grow a designer’s skill set, our Homegrown series spotlighting local collaboration, as well as just-plain-fun social events.

Our AIGA KC design awards, in its tenth year,  are one of the signature events of our creative community. Honoring outstanding design solutions by professionals and students of the greater Kansas City area, the AIGA KC Design Awards is the only local competition dedicated to design. Each spring a call for entries is announced to the public and entries are juried by a panel of acclaimed designer leaders hailing from both coasts. Then, to kick off each fall season, we hold our infamous Design Awards Gala, known as the best design party in Kansas City.

Since 2010, AIGA KC has also played a pivotal role in creating Kansas City Design Week, which celebrates the value of design in business and highlights its impact on our society. This collaborative weeklong even offers the community inspiring lectures, engaging workshops, enlightening exhibitions, collaborative celebrations and meaningful design solutions. Kansas City Design Week is one a handful of official design weeks in cities across the country. Look for it each spring!
