Landing Your First UX Job

UX is a field that is quickly evolving and the demand for UX designers is greater than ever. But the industry is competitive, and it can be difficult to get your foot in the door. Whether you're a student hoping to pursue a UX career after graduation, or a professional seeking to transition from your current role into UX, we encourage you to join us for an informative presentation and discussion about what you need to land your first UX job. We’ll discuss hard skills as well as how to build a portfolio, network, and interview. This event will present you with concrete steps to take to land the UX job you’ve been coveting.

Panelists:

Liz Hixon, Nukshuk, AIGA Programming Director

Liz Hixon is a digital product designer for Nukshuk, a local Kansas City startup. Her work at Nukshuk has involved design system development, mobile application experience and interface design, developer liaison and more. She volunteers as a programming director on the board of AIGA Kansas City. She is also the creator and owner of Red Airplane Design, which she uses as an outlet for freelance web design and branding, UX contract work, and marketing her more lighthearted artwork and designs.

Working remotely, Liz takes advantage of the opportunity to travel and has made treks across the US and internationally. She currently divides her time between the Kansas City area and Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Kendell Warner, Amazon Web Services

Kendell is a Brooklyn born native, and current resident of Seattle. He’s currently a Senior Product Designer for Amazon Web Services (AWS) - designing experiences for IoT Analytics, which helps customers analyze their IoT data. His work has ranged from manufacturing print ads to healthcare enterprise applications and believes that no great thing can be accomplished without an amazing team and a focus on understanding the audience, consumers, or users of what is being created. When not working on cool design things, Kendell volunteers as Director of Chapters for the UXPA, mentors up and coming UX talent through ADPList and occasionally spends time with his family. Every once in a while he’ll play a video game or two as well.

Ashton Shechter, Garmin

Ashton is a senior experience designer based in Kansas City, Missouri. Her work focuses on systematic design, digital innovation and screen-based consumer experiences. Ashton works as a User Experience Designer at Garmin world headquarters in Olathe, KS. Her current projects center on Design Systems, as she regularly builds the foundational components for other UX designers to apply, for developers to code and for consumers to interact with.

Prior to Garmin, Ashton was an integral part of the UX team at global advertising agency, VMYL&R. Client work includes, Ford Motor Company, Lincoln Automotive, Sherwin-Williams, Pfizer Clinical Trials, Metro by T-Mobile among other notable brands. Ashton was a key player in the design system development and worldwide distribution of FordPass, an all-in-one mobility app for Ford owners.

At home, you will likely find her playing with her perfect dog, Potato, or honing her homemade pasta-making skill set.
